The Guardian has published a shocking database of reports denouncing the systematic abuse of children and women, in particular, among asylum seekers held by the Australian government who live in the detention camp on the island of Nauru. Sexual abuse, assaults, and cruel forms of humiliation seem to be the rule, not the exception, in the camp.
The New York Times, Op Ed: Columnist Nicholas Kristof writes that the Obama administration and Mexican authorities are returning Central American refugees – including children – to their home countries where they may be raped and killed. People are fleeing El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in search of protection for themselves and their families. However, in the past five years, the United States and Mexico have deported 800,000 persons, including 40,000 children, to Central America.
